England, May 2019: Cornwall Video Moments

Throughout our years of living in London and using it as our travel base, we often have to remind ourselves to stay put in the UK. Cornwall had been on our radar and it was time to finally give it the visit it deserved. Our stay there was everything we were told it would be. From the small charming towns to the gorgeous coastal trails, there were many places to wander and feel removed from the busy day to day life we live in the city. It also won us over with some good ice cream!

England, May 2019: Cornwall

Cornwall had teased us ever since we moved to the UK; friends and colleagues would describe its stunning natural beauty, picturesque fishing villages, and distinct culture. For these reasons it was perpetually near the top of our list of UK destinations to visit, but always seemed to elude us. Finally, we decided enough was enough!

England, September 2018: Rye & East Sussex Video Moments

Back at the end of September we decided to escape the city for a weekend away on the south coast of England. Hopping in the car and driving down from London, we made stops in both Dungeness for the old lighthouse and Rye Harbour to wander through the nature reserve. Our final destination and home base for the weekend was the quaint town of Rye—a place that quickly became a favorite after our visit. Our days were full of weaving around the cobblestone streets, drinking hot chocolate, and shopping in the vintage stores. On the first evening we spent time strolling along Camber Sands catching golden hour and the sun setting over the ocean. It was hard to say goodbye after such peaceful moments!

England, September 2018: Rye & East Sussex

As part of a series of trips to see more of our adopted home, in late September we took a two-day trip to Rye. Train connections between London and Rye are plentiful and convenient, but we decided to drive from London because we wanted to see some things outside of the town. With beautiful fall weather and a full tank of gas, we set off!

England, April 2018: The Cotswolds

Rico’s parents visited England’s Cotswolds, only a couple of hours’ drive from London, when they visited in the fall, and their positive reviews inspired us to escape the city this spring. We stayed in a cute hut on a farm and hung out with the resident dogs, cats, chickens and horses.

England, October 2017: Bath

Bath had been on our list pretty much since we moved to London, but a visit had alluded us until we decided enough had been enough! The train ride from Paddington Station couldn’t have been easier and we were immediately greeted with an explosion of Georgian architecture in the golden color of the local Bath stone. Unfortunately, we were also greeted with some pretty heavy rain and we couldn’t yet check into our room at the Abbey Hotel. No fear! We rode out the worst of it at the cozy Foodie Bugle Shop where we indulged in hot chocolate and carrot cake (the shop section also had plenty of stuff to keep us busy browsing).

England, October 2017: A Day Trip To The Seven Sisters

After such a busy period of travel, we've been staying put in London the past few months and enjoying a slower pace lifestyle. While we still have some writing to catch up on for trips we took from July on (Bosnia/Croatia, Ireland, Portugal,...), we thought here would be a good point to pause on those to share what we have been up to more recently. Autumn has been a great time to catch up with friends and refocus on seeing more of what's right nearby us here in England. So, thanks to the help of a couple of those friends, we made it a mission back in October to make our way to The Seven Sisters— the most gorgeous white cliffs—in East Sussex, on the southern coast of England.

England, April 2017: Yorkshire (Knaresborough)

We’ve made a habit lately of taking day trips to smaller, less visited towns when visiting larger, more popular cities. Part of our motivation is that city breaks sometimes don’t feel like breaks—when you already live in a large, bustling city, sometimes what you really want from a weekend away is a bit of tranquility in the countryside. Hence our half-day trip to Knaresborough!

England, April 2017: Yorkshire (York)

York, Maine is a very special place to us, so it seemed a no-brainer to visit the city from which it took its name, especially when it’s only a two-hour train ride from London! We stayed at the Jorvik Hotel, a quirky, cozy, and modern spot named for the Viking version of the city’s name in the 9th century. York’s history goes back much further, having been founded by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago. Remnants of the city’s long and varied history dot the place and make it quite an enjoyable place for a visit.

England, February 2017: A Day Trip To The White Cliffs of Dover

The other weekend we needed a little escape from the city and a friend invited us to tag along to Dover to see the White Cliffs. It had been something on our list for awhile so we were excited to join in. We hopped on a morning train from London to Dover Priory to take the two-hour ride down to the southern coast of England. Once we arrived we enjoyed some lunch and then headed out to walk along the edge of the country. The cliffs were as beautiful as I imagined with the crisp white edges contrasting the dark rocks below.

London, England: The City Nooks

We have been spending most of our weekends staying put in London while we enjoy our down time away from the travel season. It's given us the perfect excuse to check off some of our must-sees or to wander around new parts. London experienced some unseasonably warm weather over the past weekend so we wanted to be sure to get ourselves out and about to enjoy it. Rico works just outside of the City of London—not to be mistaken with London which I know sounds totally confusing...it is—and has been wanting to show me around some.

London, England: Anslem Kiefer At White Cube

This past Saturday we were lucky enough to catch the Anselm Kiefer show, Walhalla, at White Cube. We hopped on the tube to Bermondsey to meet friends for a day of wandering around. Bermondsey is a great area in London when you're looking for something different and new. White Cube is just one of those spots that pulls people into explore. The gallery had been on my list of places to get to for quite some time now and I'm ashamed it took us so long to finally make our way there. It felt amazing to be there for such a powerful exhibit and has quickly shot up to be one of my top art museums to visit.

London, England: The Orchids Festival At Kew Gardens in Richmond

When it's been really cold and gloomy all you want to do is find somewhere warm and colorful to refresh. Mid-February is that time of year when winter is starting to drag and you need something to keep you going. Lucky for us—and you—the Orchids Festival is currently taking over the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens. It was a no brainer to add it to our list to check out this past weekend knowing we had some free time on Sunday. After an easy ride over on the overground and a short stroll to the elaborate greenhouse, we were finally in what felt like a tropical paradise.

London, England: Afternoon Tea At Sketch

Afternoon tea should have been high up on our list of things to do when we moved to London but it seemed to have slipped far off and out of our radar. One of those—we'll get to it eventually—things. After making my way to Sketch last year with a fellow blogger to enjoy The Glade part of the restaurant, I knew I needed to eventually go back with Rico to get the full experience of afternoon tea in The Gallery.  The (mostly) all pink restaurant may look familiar to you since it's a pretty hot spot to Instagram. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in some top lists—I've seen it pop up quite a bit AND after all, it truly is beautifully weird.
