Austria, January 2019: Skiing in Alpbach Video Moments

After spending time in Germany back in December to pick back up on our progress of learning how to ski, we decided to head back to Austria in January for a week-long trip. We started off slow on the small slope in town but by the end of the week, we were taking the cable car up into the mountains. We are still at the beginning of our journey on skis but are feeling good about the progress we made this season. Now the countdown is on for next winter!

We arrived to Alpbach, Austria only a few weeks later, warmed up and ready to tackle a full week of skiing! Hotel Boglerhof played host for this third visit to the town and we picked up rentals once again from SkiCheck.

Austria & Germany, December 2018: Skiing In The Alps

We fell in love with skiing when we learned in January and March 2018 and had been looking forward to getting back on the mountain for winter 2018/19. Having only spent 4 total days on the slopes last winter, we were able to dedicate 9 total days to skiing across two trips: one to Mittenwald, Germany during Christmas (3 days of skiing out of a 5-day trip) and another back to Alpbach, Austria in January (6 days of skiing out of an 8-day trip).

This year we decided to finally learn to ski. After researching the best spots in Europe to go to learn, we landed upon the quaint Alpine town of Alpbach. Already in love with Austria from previous trips, it instantly felt like the perfect fit. Our first weekend in January, we took lessons and enjoyed finding our footing on skis. Then in March, we went off on our own. While we didn't make it onto the trails higher up into the mountains this year, we know that when we return around Christmas time we will finally be ready. It isn't easy to push yourself to learn new things as you get older but we are so glad we learned to ski and can say we now have a new hobby!

Despite growing up mere hours from mountains in a part of the country that is blanketed in snow for much of the winter, neither of us picked up skiing or snowboarding. Britt went a handful of times when she was younger and Rico had literally never stepped foot into a binding. Over the last few years we’ve seen friends take ski trips to the Alps and something about that idea really appealed to us. We joked for a while that we should go to the mountains for a winter long weekend and learn how to ski, and at some point, that joke turned into a serious idea! We committed to giving it a try, asking our family for ski jackets, snow pants, gloves, and other gear for Christmas and booking a 4-day weekend in January.

Austria & Germany, September 2016: The Alps Video Moments

Our latest travel recap has taken you through our Austrian and German Alps trip (you can find all three parts of that here incase you missed it and are having regrets). When we traveled to Salzburg back in January to kick off the 2016 new year, we truly fell in love with the small city and wanted to see more of the area. As soon as we were home, we started planning to return in the summer! The Alps reminded us of our New England home. We used to really enjoy weekend getaways to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I think it's safe to say the Alps are little bit more crazy and intense but to be back in the fresh mountain air gave us a sense of peace.

Austria, January 2016: Salzburg Video Moments

Earlier this week we shared our weekend away in Salzburg to kick off our new year here. The trip was one that entered my heart and found a place to stay. While I take away new lessons and always aim to return home with a more open view of the world, there was just something about this trip that really stuck with me. It was the perfect place to escape to and begin 2016 in the most amazingly right way. Watching this video takes me right back to the moments that were so special to us during our time...exploring the streets of the old town, stumbling upon the locals waltzing in the square to beautiful classical music, riding the cable car to the snowy Untersberg summit in the Alps, and taking full advantage of the cafe culture. I know, without a doubt, that we will return someday. Someday hopefully soon!
