Bornholm, Denmark
Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic sea closer to Sweden (just 23 miles / 37 kilometers from the Swedish mainland) than to Denmark. It’s off the beaten path, but an American friend of ours who lives in Copenhagen had been, recommended it, and decided to join us for a trip there! After our time on Bornholm, we all went to the Faroe Islands; that trip will be covered in a separate blog post.
Itinerary
3 nights in Svaneke at an Airbnb.
Day 1: July 13, 2019
Flew from London Heathrow to Copenhagen.
Took a bus to the ferry terminal in Ystad, Sweden; met up with our friend; then took a ferry to Rønne on Bornholm.
Rented car from Europcar for the whole trip.
Checked into our Airbnb and settled into Svaneke.
Our Airbnb had a full kitchen which we used over the course of our stay to cook some of our meals using fresh ingredients from local grocery stores.
Walked around town.
Dessert from Svaneke Is.
Day 2: July 14, 2019
Visited Svaneke Gamle Fyr.
Visited the beach at 55.194420, 14.988845.
Walked the paths around the cliffs at Helligdomsklipperne.
Basked in the sun for a while on the beach at Sandkås Strand.
Ice cream at Kalas Is in Sandvig. Great views.

Visited a hidden little ceramics shop attached to a house at 55.138100, 15.116749.
Walked through the woods to Døndalen Vandfald.
Drove around the “bison park”. We enjoyed the beautiful nature enough as it was, but at the very end, we did indeed spot a bison!
We had planned to eat at Ekkodalshuset in Aakirkeby and then walk to Ekkodalen, but there was a very long wait at the restaurant, so we decided to ditch the plans and go back to Svaneke.
Lunch at Bonalâs in Svaneke.
Ice cream at Svaneke Is.
Dinner at Mikkeller in Aarsdale.
Day 4: July 16, 2019
