Travel Destinations: Our 2016 Schedule
Back in January we took off for the first weekend of the year to Salzburg, Austria. I think going on such an adventure to ring in the new year was the perfect way to celebrate what the rest of the year would bring. We're excited to be off on our way (as we speak!) to Amsterdam to kick off the 2016 travel season in earnest! After we get back the spring and summer is going to be a whirlwind of trips outside of England and a stream of visitors from home! Travel has become such an important part of our lives. When we were living in the States, we made sure to use our vacation time wisely and would travel across the Atlantic or down to Central America, but now that we are living London we seem to have let the travel bug take control. You won't hear us complain for one second about that! This is our chance to experience the world, grow together, see new things, open our eyes and minds, and become better people. We have the rest of our lives to settle down and nest—this is our time to be wildly free! And we've decided to share just where we have been so far and where we're headed for the remainder of the year!
On January 1st we woke up super early to board an almost empty flight and bring in the new year just right. We based ourselves in Salzburg for the three-day weekend, soaked in the Austrian culture (especially the cafes!) and even adventured out of the city and into the beautiful snow-covered Alps.
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS
For four days over Easter we will be staying in the picturesque neighborhood of Jordaan and spending our time walking along the canals, attempting to not get hit by bikes and visiting some of the city's best museums. We are looking forward to the cozier feel of the city and the unique, attractive architecture.
While my parents are in town visiting London for the first time, we thought a day trip to Lille via the Eurostar would add a little something to their trip.
For nine days we will be soaking in the countryside of The Netherlands during...wait for it...TULIP SEASON! We will be based in Haarlem (just 20 minutes from Amsterdam) but will have a car for trips to Kinderdijk, Utrecht, Keukenhof, Delft, Giethoorn, Leiden, Edam and Hoorn.
ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND
In mid-May my sister and our good mutual friend are coming to stay with us in London. On the weekend we are taking three days to visit Scotland, where we will be using Portree as a home base from which to explore the natural beauty and dramatic landscapes of Skye.
LUXEMBOURG CITY, LUXEMBOURG
We will be spending a three-day weekend in the Ville Haute area, the medieval town core of the capital of one of Europe's smallest nations.
CROATIA & MONTENEGRO
We will be spending nine days on the coast of these two beautiful countries, the first few of which in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Other than exploring the old town of the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” we'll also be paying visits to the small town of Cavtat and the island of Lokrum via a private boat tour. After our time on the Dalmatian Cost, we will be grabbing a car and spending the remaining six days of the trip in Perast, Montenegro on the Bay of Kotor. We have planned day trips to Herceg Novi, Kotor, Lovcen National Park and Budva as well as a parasailing excursion from the mountaintops of Lovcen National Park over the Bay of Kotor.
AMALFI COAST, ITALY
In the middle of the summer we set our sights on Italy (possibly my favorite country) for another nine-day trip! We will be staying in Amalfi and relying on buses and ferries to explore the area, with day trips to Ravello (hiking into the hills high above Amalfi), Positano, Cetara, Sorrento and Capri.
THE STATES (HOME)
For August we decided to head home and give ourselves some New England summer time. We will be spending time with our families in Massachusetts and Maine as well as taking a trip up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What are we most excited about?—ICE CREAM!
Because we loved Salzburg so much (like—I'm talking a lot a lot), I decided we should go back for nine days to see more of the country. While I wish we could cover it all, we will have to save what we miss for another trip! We’ll have a car and will be staying in Salzburg again for the first half with trips to Ebensee, Fuschl, St. Wolfgang, Schafberg and Hallstatt. For the second half we will relocate to Innsburck with trips to Kitzbuhel, Zell am See, Schlegeisspeicher, and Neushwanstein Castle right over the border in Germany.
Rico's parents are coming to visit us in London at the end of November and then they're going to take off to Alsace where we will meet them a few days later (we seem to like to go to France together—ha) to explore the Christmas markets in and around Riquewihr.
Lastly, we will head home again to be with our families in Massachusetts and Maine during the holidays! We're hoping this time around it snows and we get a beautiful New England white Christmas!
Any tips for these locations is greatly appreciated!
Where are you heading this year? We would love to hear!
