Portland Head Light: Cape Elizabeth, Maine

While visiting home last month, we took a trip up to Portland to visit our old stomping grounds from our college days. Rico and I met in Maine so the state holds a very special place in our hearts. Whenever we get the chance, we are always sure to make our way to Portland and now that we have family living there, we have an even bigger excuse to go (and stay longer!)!
Now what I'm about to tell you may come as a surprise and maybe even be a little ridiculous but Rico and I had never been to the Portland Head Light in all our years living so close to it during school. The first time we ever made it there was actually on our honeymoon two years ago. I don't know if I have ever shared the story of our honeymoon here or on any of my social platforms. I'll keep it brief and start by picking up with what I said in my last post, you can't plan everything—haha!
When Rico and I were thinking of where to go we had all these grand ideas but when moving to London started to become a reality, we decided to have a low key week somewhere in New England. Plus, we felt like since we travel so much a honeymoon didn't need to be an excuse to check somewhere off our list. Ultimately, we chose to rent a house right on a lake for the week but when we arrived, the house wasn't at all what was described or pictured. It was a total disappointment but instead of sulking we decided to cut our losses and headed to Portland—somewhere we could be guaranteed to enjoy. We rented a cute little house that we fell in love with in South Portland.
Our honeymoon turned into a little road trip down memory lane. We explored places that had so much meaning to us—spots that we had been early in our relationship and continued to go back to time and time again but we also took the time to see places we had never made it to. And that my friends is where the Portland Head Light walked itself into our lives. We spend a couple hours one day walking around the park and finally seeing the lighthouse close up. It was absolutely beautiful so when we found ourselves with some time to spare in Portland again a few weeks back, we decided to return to this very spot.
The Portland Head Light sits beautifully in the Forth Williams Park on the rocky coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Completed on 1791, the light house proudly holds the title of the oldest lighthouse in Maine though you could never tell by how well it is kept up. I love how iconic, clean, and historic the lighthouse is and looks. It is definitely easy on the eyes so it was hard to not stare at it the whole time we were walking around the paths of the park. I kept peaking around to see if I could still see it as we took turns and walked further away.
While the lighthouse is the feature here, you can't forget to turn the other way and look out at the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. The deep blues of the sea will never stop captivating me. Something about being right there in the salty air just puts your soul at peace. Having the atlantic right there plus the extra pleasure of walking around the paths of the park, made for time well spent.
This is a spot that we will continue to return to for the rest of our lives. It might seem silly since its such an iconic (and touristed) spot but it's one of those places that makes you aware of where you actually are. It's the same reason why I still tell people to go to Big Ben in London. When you are standing there looking at it, you know exactly where you are and that is such a good strong aware feeling to have.
